This weekend [livejournal.com profile] bovil and I attended Westercon 64 in San Jose.

Due to a confluence of happy circumstances with the Fairmont we acquired a free upgrade of our room to a suite, so we asked that it be put on the party floor so the London in 2014 Worldcon bid could use our parlor one night for a bid party.

Three weeks ago, on the way back from my parents' in Redding, we stopped for lunch at Granzella's and realized we could stage a hoax bid party to host Westercon 66 (2013) at Granzella's. (This would make as much sense as attempting to have a Worldcon at Casa de Fruta, which was the hoax bid we perpetrated at the LACon IV Worldcon in 2006.)

When we announced our "bid" one week before Westercon 64, the response was huge; the single filed, real bid, for Portland, Oregon, had not been doing any promotion at all, and our joke fired up all the frustration around the issue. By the time this weekend rolled around we suspected that the joke might actually defeat the Portland bid in the balloting, which would throw the decision to the Westercon business meeting. [livejournal.com profile] bovil and I had several serious discussions about what to do in that event and decided that we would accept a nomination to actually run Westercon 66 if the membership actually asked us to do so in the business meeting. There were a number of hurried conversations to make sure we had the key people available if that happened.

It did, in fact, happen )

So: Andy and I will be running Westercon 66 in 2013!

We're looking (first) at venues in Sacramento, in alignment with the Olive Country beginnings of this string of events. Registration, etc., will begin as soon as the necessary legal paperwork is in place to allow us to accept money (ficticious business name, etc).

Right now the "ZellaCon" Facebook group is our only web presence; we'll be using that temporarily as a communications medium if you want to volunteer/ask questions.

Edited to correct some minor errors on my part about the parliamentary details of reconsideration; thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kevin_standlee for the corrections

Actually, there are TWO!

Our lamentably delayed May issue, "International Travelogue Issue", and our June costume wedding special, "Unbridaled", are now both available for free download from www.yipezine.com !

That's right -- I promised pictures. This one isn't great, but I have it

photo under the cut )

If the settings on the album let you view it, you can also see me in the background in this picture: http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/248996_1974468194960_1040704767_2323288_3706438_n.jpg

You can see the suit hangs properly in that one.

13 years ago [livejournal.com profile] bovil and I met in St. Louis in the hospitality suite the night before Costume-Con 16 began, and we're still going strong.

6 years ago TODAY we united our families in a ceremony at Natural Bridges State Beach in front of a circle of forty-odd friends.

3 years ago in June we became constitutionally inconvenient in a brief ceremony at the weekly Monday BASFA meeting.

Happy Anniversary, my love!

It being September, that means that not only did I have my monthly measurements with my personal trainer Josh, but it was time for the regular cholesterol check with my doctor.

The news was good.
boring/bragging details under the cut )
So, such good news on the health front coming into my 49th birthday is a pretty good gift. I just have to keep up the eating/exercise regimen.

11 years ago tonight, I met my beloved [livejournal.com profile] bovil.

In the Hostility Hospitality Suite the night before Costume-Con 16 started.

The rest is history.*

Happy Anniversary1, my love!

*Constitutionally inconvenient history, since we were legally wed June 23, 2008. That would be Anniversary3. Anniversary2 is May 25, 2005, when we married each other in the midst of our friends and family on Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz, California. :-)

This morning I was planning to skip my morning workout (given my 5-day a week gym habit, you need to understand that's not a casual decision) to get in line and vote first thing this morning instead. When I voted in the primary I did so in the evening, and my precinct had actually run out of ballots and had to improvise for me.

At the last moment, the little voices suggest I kit up for my workout, put on my neat sweats and pack my work clothes in the gym bag anyway, so if the wait wasn't horrific I could still do something at the gym. If it was long, I could just shower and change there and head to work.

I got to the polling place at 6:58 and there were 18 of us waiting. Two turned out to be at the wrong polling place (they needed to be at the church down the block and up the hill), but everyone one was patient, eager to vote, and almost everyone was carrying their sample ballot (hurrah!). The polls opened right on time and I was out at 7:20, so I managed to get some rowing and stretching in after all.

Get out there and vote. I won't claim I don't care how you vote (in particular, if you're in California I hope you'll vote No on 8), but I hope you'll take the time to consider the issues and exercise your franchise.

[livejournal.com profile] jaylake is running a poll for one of his friends to be Tuckerized (included as a character) in Tourbillon, the third book in the series he started with Mainspring.

I'm in the running. So go visit The Poll and vote.

Preferably for me :-)

(That means vote for [livejournal.com profile] kproche, obviously. You know that already, right, because you're reading one of my LiveJournal entries?)

This weekend I set out to repair a leaky irrigation valve in the back yard. I expected a muddy day.

Home-repair neepery behind the cut -- how I fixed the leak )

I'll pressure test it in the morning, but everything looks good so far.

Best of all -- no mud.

Color me pleased.

[livejournal.com profile] bovil and I were legally wed in front of 48 people at the BASFA meeting tonight. There was much cheering.

Almost, but not quite as fast as the 11 second ceremony in SpaceBalls.

[livejournal.com profile] kevin_standlee thinks he has video to post. I'll keep y'all posted.

The BASFA rumor of the week had something to do with "married gay boys kissing"

I love my friends.
