This morning San Francisco Science Fiction Conventions, Inc. (SFSFC) announced that should the San Jose in 2018 bid for the 76th World Science Fiction Convention succeed, I will be the convention chair.

You can read the complete press release on the SFSFC website.

I'm thrilled, honored, and (appropriately) mildly terrified to have been appointed.

There have been lots of congratulatory notes and (more importantly!) offers of help flying in already, which is quite gratifying.

To avoid the curse of social media scrolling your offer away, if you want to reach me at my "official" address, it's kevin.roche@sjin2018.org.

[livejournal.com profile] bovil and I have been at Further Confusion all weekend, taking today to pack up, but not moving home until tomorrow, so we can avoid the zoo that is the bell/valet service at midday on the last day of the convention.

I also booked our rooms for LoneStarCon 3 while we are at it.

And, on top of it all, the costumes for my masquerade entry at LoneStarcon 3 are already 2/3 finished.
kproche: (Jungleboy Transparent)
For the Hugo Awards, of course.

If you are a member of last year's Chicon, this year's LoneStarCon, or next years Loncon, you are entitled to submit a nomination ballot for the Hugo Awards. One of which is for Best Fanzine.

Shameless plug:

If you read and enjoy Yipe!, I hope you will consider it during your nominating process.

28 days and counting to this year's Worldcon Masquerade!

That's right, it's only four short weeks away!

If you are considering entering, I strongly recommend you take a few minutes and fill out the entry form at http://www.renovationsf.org/masquerade .
It only takes a few minutes and will give [livejournal.com profile] bovil and I a better idea in advance of what to prepare our crew for.

You can return at any time before Wednesday, August 17, to add or update your entry information. At that point, you'll need to come see us on-site at the masquerade desk in the lobby of the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.

If you are not considering entering, but will be attending, we can always use more volunteers in the green room (being ably run by Byron Connell), back/on-stage crew (impeccably organized by Chris O'Halloran) or as ushers in the house (being managed for us by Bill Keaton). Drop a note to masquerade@renovationsf.org and let us know how you would like to help.

Counting down the days now...

co-director, Renovation Masquerade

This is not friends-locked, because the original is available on the IGC-D public archive at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ICG-D/message/33537

If you can't access it, post a comment and I will copy the text here.

Note that I was mostly happy with the masquerade, but am not happy about the turn this discussion has taken. It didn't need to go where it has gone, and I don't blame [livejournal.com profile] karisu_sama for that progression.

Andy got some spectacular on-stage shots, but these backstage candids from Richard show off some details.

OH, and by the way, Conrad's feet were featured on the FRONT PAGE of the Saturday Orange County Register, along with [livejournal.com profile] twjudy's head and several other folks in a very nice montage.

Backstage -- right after rehearsal

Conrad and the gang, waiting to go on

Conrad relaxing backstage

Closeup of Dana as Conrad's "Alien Phan"

Closeup of Bruce as Conrad's bodyguard

I'll try to pull the images of the new camera tonight and get them uploaded.

Edit 12:11PM -- A brief description of the presentation, pending video availability...

Music: Tom Jones & The Art of Noise doing a cover of Prince's "Kiss"

  • Begins with MC saying And now, direct from a three-epoch run at the Mesozoic Mezzanine, C-O-N-R-A-D -- T-- L-I-Z-A-R-D!

  • Musical sting, then sound of motorcycle revving. Conrad zooms across upstage on a Razor™ Scooter from stage right wing to stage left wing. Sound of a crash.

  • Main music starts, and Conrad comes out boogie-ing.

  • As he moves downstage, a mob of four screaming female fans shove out on stage, trying to push past the bodyguard (Bruce), finally succeeding and line up in a row behind Conrad. Bodyguard, disgusted, takes a step back.

  • Conrad makes his fans swoon with delight by dancing a turn with each of them, in an appropriate style.

  • He then works back downstage center and bodyguard re-interposes himself between the star and his fans. Unbeknownst to either of them, the fans have started pulling out exotic underwear.

  • Conrad strikes his final pose and the final musical sting hits.

  • Fans throw underwear at Conrad (thus pelting bodyguard with it) and pursue him offstage.

  • Bodyguard follows slowly, collecting abandoned undergarments and trying to figure out exactly how the alien panties could possibly fit...

Party shopping is done (yay!). Check.

Masquerade documentation is printed, high-res on photo paper, and assembled in binder. Check.

Note is off to housing department to make sure they've booked our party room next to our sleeping room... No reply yet, but they have our cell number. Check.

FedEx tracking says our 4 trunks are on the truck for delivery today. Check.

Got up, down to the hotel gym and did the Monday workout my trainer wrote out for me. Andy is in shower; I'm next. Check

Have sunscreen, long-sleeved shirt, broad-brimmed hat. Check

As soon as I'm out of the shower, it's breakfast and Andy's first visit to Disneyland!
We'll actually get to use both days of our two-day passes! Hurrah!

Toodles! We're off to visit the Mouse!

The order of Costume-Con 26 merchandise which includes the prizes I'm donating to Match Game SF at WorldCon was delayed.
Estimated delivery date: August 21.
Two friggin' days after we've left for Anaheim.

Anyone out there driving to LA from the SF Bay Area Monday night or Tuesday Morning who could swing by and collect it from the porch en route?

ETA: Hurrah for [livejournal.com profile] lobolance, who says he can collect the box before he heads south! We are saved! Hallelujah!
