Westercon observation (well, okay, it's a whinge)

Being the only gay couple at a convention is, well, boring. We had a lovely time with many fannish friends, but being the token gay couple surrounded by young straight fans in their breeding frenzy becomes, shall we say, somewhat tedious? Who were *we* supposed to flirt with?

Westercon was the same weekend as the Calgary Gay Rodeo, so all the Canadians (even if they *knew* about Westercon) were out camping at the Rodeo Grounds all weekend.

Plus, Gaylaxicon was the same weekend as Westercon this year.

Sigh.

So, note to the Gaylaxians: Booking "the annual national gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender & friends Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, and Gaming Convention" the same weekend as a major mainstream SF convention makes the other convention far less fabulous. Can we avoid doing that again?

I think Toronto has dates but the website isn't up and running yet, and Atlanta's bid just got accepted, but they don't have dates locked in yet, they just know it'll be in October.

One of the guys I met at Worldcon in San Jose mentioned Gaylaxicon, and he mentioned it again when I was at Gallifrey, and Los Con.
Maybe I should look into going to it next year. The blonde boy even mentioned raiding my closet...lol...he costumes a lot like me.

You try to find a good weekend that doesn't conflict with a major SF Con. We were also up against Gen-Con the gaming convention and our gaming room still rocked!

Do you have dates in mind for your Costume Con in 2008?

2008 hasn't booked up too much for me yet, so I could probably work the connvention for you... maybe Con Suite? (I hear that's a low-key area at Costume Con...)

We're looking for the final weekend in April. Dependent, of course on getting the venue that weekend.

Sandra is our hospitality chair; we actually expect our Con Suite to be a moderately busy place...
