I've been invited to exhibit Tiki Dalek at the London Worldcon in August.

If I can get him there.

Andy and I can cover our own expenses, but it may cost as much as one of our tickets to ship him there and back.

So I started a crowdfunding campaign for him via gofundme.com

Some highlight photos of the work completed this weekend (I have detail photos, but not time to write the descriptions yet).

I've packaged the touchscreen and Arduino controller in a nice box.
The silicone-sealed chiller-nozzle passed its leak test with flying colors today.
The support structure for the chiller nozzle and the glass platform are done.

Photos under the cut! )

In other news, I got Tiki Dalek Kraziness (TDK) repacked and prepped for shipping down to Gallifrey. We're sending him to a nearby FedEx office rather than paying the (to me) outrageous receiving ($5/box) and storage ($10/box) fees the hotel would ask. Those would double the cost of shipping him!

I've been meaning to post these for several weeks.

We took TDK to Westercon 64 in San Jose; I finally embellished his shoulder section to my satisfaction with the addition of mesh under the large slats on his shoulders. He was a special guest at the London in 2014 party, and we shot some photos using their decor.

He'll be on display in the Exhibits hall at the Reno Worldcon.

TDK had two outings on Saturday at Nova Albion to the great amusement of onlookers.

The first time out was mid-afternoon, when the steampunkonsumption (shopping) was in full swing. As Nova Albion had spread out the vendors across two rooms (on two different floors, with their usual inadequate aisles between the tables) and the mezzanine, it made for slow going. It was, however great fun.

The quick-and-dirty voice modifier definitely has to be replaced; TDKs voice was too hard to understand a good part of the time. It's also been suggested I add a second pair of rear-facing speakers to his undercarriage.

The second time out was after dinner, while folks were waiting for the evening concert ("An Airship Home Companion") to begin. A turn through the ballroom (and waiting audience) was well received, and resulted in a couple of very nice photos by [livejournal.com profile] johno with Lee Press-On. Then off he trundled to the bar area where, unbeknownst to yours truly, he amazed a group of exhibitors from the Bricks by the Bay Lego convention next door.

After putting TDK safely to bed, [livejournal.com profile] bovil and I returned to the concert in more comfortable (Edo Japanese) garb, where I was introduced to said group. They turned out to include the organizers of this weekend's BarBot 2011 robotic bartending competition, and Grant Imihara from Mythbusters! (I wish I'd realized at the time; I'd love to have a photo of Grant with TDK.)

As a result, arrangements have been made for TDK to appear at BarBot on Saturday; [livejournal.com profile] bovil and I had already been considering going to it and staying over Saturday after visiting Wondercon, and meeting the organizers (and their enthusiasm for TDK) clinched the deal.

At the suggestion of a FB friend, I've also secured the Twitter username TikiDalek for TDK. I don't expect he's going to be terribly prolific, but this will keep someone else from putting words in his (my) vocalizer on Twitter.

I've also been informed that TDK will be featured in the Gallifrey One article in Issue Two of the new magazine Doctor Who Insider!

Looks like another fifteen minutes of fame; we'll enjoy it while it lasts! :-)

I've been working on refinements to the Tiki Dalek.

Several are designed to make him pack as more flat pieces (and thus be more shippable).

However, one of the critical lacks at Gallifrey when he was out conga-ing in the hallways was his inability to speak to the folks around him.

That has been fixed!

The voice modulator is not a perfect Dalek voice; I have plans for a better one. This is built using a hobby kit based on the WIN8072 IC, but had the advantage of coming with a pre-etched circuit board and all the necessary components for quick assembly.

TDK will debut with his new voice at Nova Albion this weekend (shhh)

Now that the show is over, I've unlocked the posts of the build diary for Secret Project TDK.

You can see them from start to finish (well, from finish to start; I don't know of a way to reverse the fact they'll display most recent first) using this link:

http://kproche.livejournal.com/tag/project%20tdk

Now I have to go back to finishing the article I'm writing for Yipe! about it.

Project TDK: Tiki Dalek Kraziness won Best In Show in the Gallifrey One Masquerade last night.

Better photos once [livejournal.com profile] bovil uploads them. I expect there will be video and other people's photos going up too.

I took TDK apart into his 3 main sections to finish up assorted details:

Photos under here )

All that's left now is the soundtrack!

I trimmed down the upper part of the neck assembly tonight, and did a test assembly with leis as the neck rings. The struts still need to be finished, but I have time for that tomorrow night.

Last weekend was REALLY busy. There are LOTS of photos under the link

Tens of photos under the link )

Along the way I discovered two design problem; the upper cane webbing cylinder fits too closely into the lower one, and the head can't move up and down. This can be mitigated by taking 1/2 to 1 inch off the diameter of the upper disk (the rollers for the dome run on the inside edge of the disk, so they'll still work) and restapling the cane. This will eliminate the interference.

Secondly, the braided reed I did for the rings looks really crappy next to the webbing. I'm going to get a pile of fabric flower leis and use them for the rings instead. I can actually tack them directly to the cane webbing. As luck would have it, one will cover the area where the upper cylinder enters the lower, and disguise the transition.

Almost there! (and boy are my hands tired after installing all those hooks and knotting all those beads!)

Saturday I started work on the patterns for the bamboo slat cladding for the shoulder section. I also decided to build a friend.

Saturday )
Then Sunday, I set out to finish the shoulders. I got part way done, and did more work on my mutant.

Oh, the Humanity! Still more photos )

Finally, today (Monday, Jan 31) I had the opportunity to use the drill press in the shop at work, so I took my Forstner bits with me and cut the mounting bores in the acrylic salt and pepper shakers for the dome.

One more set of photos! )

So tomorrow: Take the rest of the rolled up bamboo shades to cut with the bandsaw in the hack shop at work (with permission from the shop manager, of course). I'm now just waiting for one final component to build the lift mechanism for the neck section.

The next big job was building the canvas underlayer for the grass skirt. The result is a combination of petticoat and corset technology:
