Gory details behind the cut.

OK, so after re-marking the foamcore I started cutting it out.

oops.

Nerve compression in my neck plus tendinitis = Exacto Knife not a good idea.

Stopped and got a nice ergonomic-handled utilitly knife.

Carved out 9 main arc segments and 9 trim arcs.

Today, thanks to 3M Super77, they're all laminated together properly.

Next step: Paint!

First: A layer of Rust-Oleum primer for plastic, so the styrofoam core won't melt.

Second: Rust-Oleum Grey Hammered Metal Finish paint

Then we have to carve out the wells for the plasma disks...

I haven't had the chance to comment yet, but I've loved reading about your progress on the stargate. :) Definitely post progress pics when you can!

A while back (we're talking almost ten years ago now!) I was a percussion instructor for my alma mater high school marching band and they performed music from the movie Stargate. My little brother was in the band at this point, so my dad went a little crazy and built a nearly full-scale stargate replica for the band to use during the show. He had to rent a trailer to bring that thing to competitions!

I'll have to see if I can dig up pictures of it, because I think you'd get a kick out of it. If for nothing else, just to see the construction. He built it out of wood, and there was a hinge in there somewhere so it could fold up for travel. The glyphs were all painted on, because they just needed to look good from a distance. And if I'm remembering correctly, there was a sheet of plastic stretched across the opening and a blue flood light shone on it from behind so the stargate would "glow" at particular moments in the show. It was cool. :)

Reading about your stargate project brings me back. :)
